Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is an efficient treatment technique for varicose veins and spider veins using a minimally invasive procedure. A solution termed ‘sclerosing solution’ or ‘sclerant’ is injected into the veins which causes the veins to shrink or harden and fade in a few days. Apart from treating the appearance of veins, sclerotherapy also relieves the pain, cramps, and swelling associated with spider and varicose veins.
Common Causes of Spider and Varicose Veins
- Heredity: Varicose vein is usually found in people with a family history of the disease.
- Gender: Women are more prone to varicose veins than men.
- Obesity: Increased pressure on veins due to obesity is also a common cause
- Pregnancy: Varicose or spider veins may appear during pregnancy. However, this is often temporary and disappear a few months after the delivery.
- Aging: As the veins lose strength with age, chances of varicose veins are higher.
Sclerotherapy- What to expect in a session?
A typical sclerotherapy session extends to an hour at most. The physician uses an extra-fine needle to administer the sclerant into the veins, one at a time. A slight burning sensation and cramps may be experienced. What the sclerant does is irritate the veins and cause them to harden for a while until they disappear and are absorbed by the body. The hardening of veins and associated discomfort may be experienced for a longer time if the case is more severe. Care must be taken to avoid strain on the legs for a prescribed duration after the treatment. However, the patient can continue with their daily activities right after the treatment.
